Love Lost; Love Begins

This fable shows how drug addiction and having a bad childhood can affect someone's life. Parents need to make sure they set a good example, and their children should have the power to avoid   committing themselves of doing any type of drug. You need to make sure you know what you're doing because if you begin to drink or do drugs, you lose your train of thought and might end up being a case of teen pregnancy. Maturity is power!

Childhood is a time we all remember because this is the only time we can recall when we are blessed for having complete innocence. When you’re a child, that’s when you soak up all you can so you can grow up with the behavior your learning, and that is why it is crucial for parents to set an outstanding example. Children are born with innocence, so they should not grow up filling the gaps in their lives with guilt and despair. This is exactly what the dog Rufus needed when he required direction at the most crucial time of his life.

As a pup, he couldn’t distinguish what was wrong or right, so he did whatever he believed was right because that is the way how his dad lived. He admired his dad, which is understandable due to the fact of a father being a child’s first role model. His dad was never home, so he treasured him even more when he saw him. His mom kept him contempt and never gave Rufus a straight answer to him, except telling him he’s having a conversation with a friend. Rufus was always confused because he’s never seen the so-called friend before.

“Mom, where has Dad been this whole time?” he asked.

As he said that, there was a yell outside of the door. He could tell it was his dad, because the tone is similar to when he is talking to his mom. He couldn’t recognize who exactly his father was speaking too.

“I know you have been cheating me Rodrigo” George stated. “You think I am a fool? It is time you understand I am not one to upset when dealing with the supply. I know you have been increasing the price on the bananas on me just because I’m a regular customer.”

“What are you talking about? I have been supplying you with the top quality bananas I can require, and this is how you treat me?” asked Rodrigo.

“It’s time I show you how I should have been treating you this whole time!” raged George.

George rapidly took out his concealed butcher knife from his belt, and swung it with all of his might towards Rodrigo’s neck. Rodrigo ducks, uses George’s strength against him, takes the knife, and stabs George straight in the left eye. George barks as loud as he can as he is near death. Rodrigo screeches, takes the supply of bananas, and escapes in the trees in an instant.

“Dad! No don’t leave me Dad! I love you so much!” cried Rufus.

Rufus ran to his dad’s body and held him in his hands the whole night. The blood rapidly spurting out of George’s facial area did not seem to bother Rufus because he was just blown away that his father was gone.

“I’m out here in the cold, holding my father’s lifeless body, and my mother doesn’t even come outside and help me?” questioned Rufus.

“Your father was a failure, Rufus. He was so addicted to these bananas he got so caught up in it he got himself into deep trouble. I’ve only stayed with him for you. This dog doesn’t deserve an inch of my pity!” barked Melissa.

“What kind of mother are you? You should’ve told me the truth from the beginning; not hold me on to this everlasting lie. You always told me Dad was out trying to chase out mailmen and acquire dog food for us, but that was a lie. You could’ve helped him with his addiction, but you didn’t. I’ll see you in the next world, Melissa.” howled Rufus.

Rufus’s mind was filled with immense rage, he ran off without looking back. As he is running, he begins to think of never seeing his father again. He finds a somewhat cozy area next to some bushes near the sidewalk, gets comfortable, lies down and begins to weep.

“There is nothing left for me. There is no way I will be able to obtain food in my bowl now. I’d rather die then go back to my mom. There must be a reason my dad loved these bananas so much.” explained Rufus.

Rufus continually kept muttering to himself about the situation, and eventually cried himself to sleep. He still didn’t know how to react to the situation and was just looking for some type of release. He wakes up the next morning, and has many tasks on his agenda.

“Dad obviously added bananas to his bowl for a reason. I need to find that, monkey, and approach him gently. He probably will not accept to see me easily, and I will try to hold my eagerness for revenge in.” thought Rufus.

On the warm and slight windy day, Rufus slowly walked around the sidewalk randomly looking everywhere. There is suddenly a rapid noise in the trees.

“Rodrigo, if this is you, I need to have a word with you. I am not looking for revenge; only questions are on my mind.”

Rodrigo hopped down with a fierce slam. He notices the sadness and confusion in Rufus’s eyes, so he eases up not expecting a fight from this young dog. The willful Rodrigo nods, waiting for a question to be asked.

“My father seemed to have a strong addiction to your bananas, so what exactly do they do Rodrigo?”

“Yes, I would assume you would follow your father’s steps. These bananas will change your life. They will ease your pain, and fill the gaps in any holes you receive from any kind of broken heart.” Rodrigo replied.

“Why has my father George become so addicted to this?”

“I am not obligated to answer that. I’m a dealer, not a therapist. If you’re not interest and just want to talk, then let me be because I have many customers in the trees to attend to. I recommend banana blue for your first time” replied Rodrigo.

“No, I am most definitely interested. I don’t have any money though.”

“First batch is on the house. I will give you 15 bananas, and if you want to be as high as the sky and eager for dog food intensively, eat all of them. Forget your troubles; ease your pain” explained Rodrigo.

Rufus took that bag quickly like he was eager to be released from reality. Rodrigo climbs off into the trees, and Rufus goes to find a spot where he won’t be tempted by mailmen or cats trailing by. He finds a nice place in the dog park that seems private. He peels all of the bananas, and eats twelve of them, saving three.

Rufus felt happier than he has felt for the past months. He seems to have lost all his stress, and started walking down the streets. Although he felt free, he had love missing. He went out looking for it, and couldn’t control any of his actions completely due to the banana affect. A female dog trots by noticing Rufus immediately.

“Hey, what’s up girl?” questioned Rufus.

“If you’re talking to me, you obviously don’t know how to talk like a gentle dog” she
replied.

“Have you been stressed lately miss?”

“Actually I have because you started to try to talk to me.”

“I’m sorry you feel that way. I guess I’ll eat these last three of these bananas alone.”

She was quickly interested. She’s heard of these bananas before from all her friends, and she feels lower than them since she hasn’t had one yet. She looks at him contently, trying to make eye contact with him for slight intimacy.

“Come to the park with me and I’ll share you my last three” explained Rufus.

“That sounds great and my name is Denise by the way.”

“Does it look like I care?” replied Rufus rudely.

Denise did not seem to care about his remark. All she cared about was trying to fit in with her friends due to her feeling of being left out for not eating bananas. They reached to the park, sat down behind the tree, and she ate the bananas in less than a minute. She starts to feel higher than a kite, and begins to talk nonsense.

“Your one of the greatest dogs I know. You’re so sweet and kind. I love you so much!” exclaimed Denise.

“I honestly feel the same way about you. Do you want us to prove our love to each other?” questioned Rufus.

“Why wouldn’t I want to?” questioned Denise in a loud humorous laugh.

Rufus and Denise both know they were doing wrong, but did it anyway because the bananas were blocking their heads. The next morning Rufus knew what he did, and ran off to try to get away from his future; being a father. He swore to never eat bananas again because it caused him to make a puppy with a girl he barely knew. He lived as a bum, begging for money to get by. Many people tried to adopt him, but he couldn’t stand the feeling of family. He wanted to do what he wanted to do without any restrictions.

Around nine months later, he continues as a bum on the street trying to live his life off fast food by the
money he is given, he sees Denise walking slowly with a little puppy similar looking to her walking beside her. Denise couldn’t forget Rufus’s scent, so she notices him and begins to bark. Instead of choosing to run, Rufus
noticed he needed to be a man in the situation because of the innocence he saw in the puppy’s eyes.

“Look who decided to show up!” yelled Denise.

“I know Denise, I know. You and I made a mistake and I’m sorry for it. As I have been living homeless, I have taken a deep look into myself. My father was killed because of his addiction to those god-forsaken bananas, and my mother being a very selfish individual. We did not make a mistake. Everything happens for a reason. Please, let me be the father of your child because I can’t go another day without seeing my daughter’s beautiful, pure eyes that I seem to always get lost in” explained Rufus.

Denise could not comprehend how Rufus sounded. She wanted to tell him off, but she seemed to want to have him in his life again. She needs a father to support his child, and need the emotional report every step on the way. They both did a slight bark of happiness at each other. Rufus carried his daughter Stella by picking her up gently and putting her on his back for a joy ride. Rufus seemed to now be at peace.

As the years went on, Rufus found a job as a maker of dog food and provided a great amount of income for his family. He doesn’t want his daughter to make the same mistakes he has. He raises her strict, but showing her love every step of the way because he knows the feeling of abandonment. Denis stays with him for the rest of their lives, not decreasing happiness each second. Changed can be made, it just depends what you do with it.

  1. AWWW! Ben, that was absolutely fantastic! At first, I was thinking, "Bananas? OK?" Then, I realized what purpose they served. It's supposed to be parallel to the use of drugs, correct? I love the character of Rufus, because you really developed his personality. Great fable.

  3. This was very well written. The feeling Rufus experienced were very well portrayed, and his motivations as well. I'm curious though, why did you choose bananas?

  4. Wow! That was really well written fable. But I think you used the wrong word for affect. I think it should be "effect" in "the banana affect." It made me realize a lot about life. Great job Ben! You portrayed a lot of emotions in this fable.

  5. Wow great story Ben!!!! I enjoyed reading this a lot. In the last paragraph though the sentence where it says "He raises her strict, but showing her love," wouldn't it be his love? Otherwise really good!!
